Reasons to Undertake a Brick Restoration Project for Your Home

Your home may look weathered or exhibit defects in the external walls. To help with these issues and others, you could consider a brick restoration project. Here are several reasons to undertake such an upgrade.

Cracked Mortar

One defect that calls for professional help is cracked mortar joins on your home's external walls. Cracks can arise from situations such as shifting foundations, water damage, and excessive heat. The walls bear the roof and other elements' weight, and cracks can emerge from wear and tear over the years. Some blame may lie with the ingredients within old mortar from decades ago. One possible solution is for contractors to undertake repointing. This process involves chiselling out the decayed mortar and replacing it with a fresh mix to restore the wall's integrity.

Crumbling Mortar

Sometimes, the mortar on a brick wall might be crumbling and falling away rather than forming more apparent cracks. Repointing will rejuvenate the wall and make it strong again. Another possibility is tuckpointing. This process is similar to repointing, but it creates a more beautiful effect. During this technique, contractors remove the old mortar and replace it with mortar that is similarly coloured to the bricks.

They then apply a thin line of contrasting putty along the mortar joins. This creates the illusion of ultra-fine joints between the bricks and straight edges. Because the mortar is brick-coloured, it hides any unevenness along the edges.

To Prevent Further Damage

A brick restoration will help to prevent further damage to your house. Once mortar crumbles and gives way,  it allows rainwater to seep between the bricks. This moisture can cause the crumbling to get worse. Plus, water can trigger a series of further issues. It can rot and warp structural timber beams and soak wall insulation, leading to additional repair costs.  Repointing and tuckpointing will seal the walls from the weather and protect them from rain, hail, and sun.

You're Selling Your Home

If you're selling your home, a brick restoration project will help your sale chances. It will create a more attractive kerb view to encourage interested buyers to explore the property's interior. They'll be assured that the walls are structurally sound, making your house are a more attractive prospect.

Thus, several reasons can trigger the need for a brick restoration project. You may worry about the condition of the external walls of your home. After a brick restoration, the walls will be sounder. Plus, they'll keep rainwater out and stop resulting moisture issues. If your home is on the market, pristine and secure walls will appeal to potential buyers.
